One of few venues that opened up an online casino after establishing their online casino room, Purple Lounge is a relative newcomer to the scene; powered by Microgaming software. With a reputation for catering to higher-limit card players in their casino room, I was curious to see how the casino treated more casual players like myself.

First up, the Web site. Split up into two main sections, one for the casino room and the other for the casino operations, it was quick and easy to hop over to the information I needed. The online casino section looked very nice, with a cool blue theme and a well laid out navigation structure. Unfortunately, there wasn't quite as much information as I would have liked; there were no game previews per-se (the names of each game were available; but no screenshots of further information), support was offered only by e-mail or through a form via their web site, though live chat was/is available through the casino or casino room software after installation. No phone numbers were posted, toll-free or otherwise (which surprised me a bit considering the casinos M.O. focuses largely on taking extra care of their players)

 

The casino (as well as the casino room) was available as both a downloadable client for PC users, as well as a no-download, Flash based version for those on Macs (or those who simply don't want to download for whatever reason). As I usually do I opted for the download, as it normally contains the most games and a slightly better quality than the no-download counterpart.

The download went nice and quick, and I was registering my real money account with Purple Lounge in no time. The registration process was straight forward, though it should be noted that an activation e-mail is sent to the address you registered with, and you won't be able to log in until activation has been completed.

Once my registration and activation were complete, I was ready to make my first deposit - which I did using my credit card. While it wasn't a huge deal - once again there was an extra step involved in the process (when compared to most casinos at least), I first had to deposit to my 'wallet' at Purple Lounge, then transfer that money to my casino account before I could actually play with it. This seems to have been done to allow the players to have a means to transfer money between the casino room and casino, something I've seen at a few casino/sportsbook combinations as well.

At the time of my review, Purple lounge was offering a 100% "slots only" match bonus on a first deposit between $25 and $200. I normally don't take bonuses when reviewing to avoid having any playthrough requirements, and this time was no exception. That said, I read through the terms and conditions for the promotion offer, and with a 25x bonus + deposit playthrough requirement and nothing too unusual in the terms, it was pretty reasonable sounding - at least by today's bonus standards.

With the casino downloaded and my account finally registered and funded, it was time to test the casino games and my luck out!

 

First up; Blackjack. While there's not normally a lot of options to choose from in terms of 21, Purple Lounge seemed to have move variations on the game than I could count. These included: European, Bonus, Spanish, Vegas Downtown, Vegas Strip, Atlantic City, Double Exposure Blackjack, Super Fun 21 and even a progressive game called Triple 7's. Most of the games were also available in 'Gold' versions, which play the same as their regular counterparts, but have an updated appearance and look a fair bit better. If you count the Multi-Hand versions as separate games as well, there's nearly 30 different types to choose from in all!

I suspect the 'regular' versions of the game were left in the casino for older players who prefer to keep things looking as they were when they originally started playing, but the Gold versions really do look a lot better while playing the same games, so I'd recommend sticking with those games denoted as 'Gold' whenever there's a choice to be made. This goes for some of the other table games as well, such as Roulette.

Speaking of which, Roulette was the next game I decided to give a try. Purple Lounge had Roulette available in 5 different versions altogether: American, European, European Gold, French, and a progressive game called Roulette Royale, in which the progressive can be won if the same number is spun 5 times in a row. As European has the best odds I normally play that, and once again the Gold version has the better visuals out of the two - making it the preferred choice out of the bunch (unless you're on the hunt for a progressive). The European Roulette Gold table looked great, and while I didn't have the bankroll to play my 17 strategy this time around - I did manage to win a few bucks making some outside bets before moving on.

The Craps table was only available in one version (no regular vs. Gold decision here), which was fine as it looked pretty good as-is. There was a $5 minimum bet on the tables, and while there was nothing that really caught my attention as being 'special', all in all it was a decent rendition of the game.

Baccarat was again only available in a single version, and while the table looked 'ok', I think a Gold version may have been in order this time around. With a relatively steep $10 minimum bet, I would have preferred a little more eye candy for my wagering dollars, though I suppose the games that have been updated to 'Gold' versions are the more popular ones.

While the game previews at the Purple Lounge site didn't mention them, there were in fact a number of other table games available such as casino Ride, Caribbean Stud, 3 Card casino and a few more options to choose from. While they all played well enough, none were available in the 'Gold series' versions, so they didn't have quite the visual appeal of the newer games added.

 

Video casino was available in a good variety of types: Aces and Eights, Aces and Faces, All Aces, All American, Bonus Deuces Wild, Bonus casino, Bonus casino Deluxe, Deuces and Joker, Deuces Wild, Double Bonus casino, Double Double Bonus casino, Jacks or Better, Joker casino, Tens or Better and Louisiana Double casino. Each of these variations are available in single hand formats, and about half can be found in multi-hand versions as well (some up to 100 hand). In addition to the normal games there's a progressive available called Supajax casino, in which the jackpot is paid out when a Royal Flush is hit.

The Video casino games looked decent and played very well. While many casinos include imagery of the 'machine' being played, be it single or multi-hand games all the versions here were presented in a 'screen-only' format. While the graphics weren't anything to write home about, each of the games had good paytables and were packed full of features, 'expert' mode for strategic and automated play - double up options after a win, and auto-held cards after a winning initial deal. My luck held more or less even after trying out a handful of the different games available.

The slot machine variety was great, with a large number of classic and video slots to choose from in all kinds of themes, as well as plenty of progressive jackpots to choose from (11 in all, not including the other 5 progressives that aren't slots). If you enjoy playing online slots, you'd be hard pressed to not find quite a few games to enjoy here - no matter what you're tastes.

Ultimately it was that great variety of slots that ended up costing me the rest of my bankroll, but nonetheless I did have a fun time while losing it, and got a good amount of play time in before the house edge finally took it's toll. That means this time around I didn't have anything to cash out and test the process, but I'm sure there wouldn't have been any issues with the Microgaming-powered casino were that the case.

Would I recommend Purple Lounge to my readers? With a great game variety and a solid reputation, I think I would. There were a few small annoyances (my biggest - the lack of telephone numbers posted), but all-in-all I had a good time playing, and the good far outweighed the bad.
